The Law (Torah)
What it is
Editorial background written for this app. Not Scripture.
'Torah' means instruction as much as legislation. It refers to the first five books of the Bible and to the commandments within them, given to a people already rescued from Egypt.
New to this? How to read this page
The first sections describe what the Bible and history actually say. Further down, two sections are marked Reflective: a symbolic reading and a personal one. Those are ways of thinking with the text, not claims about what the original writer meant.
You can stop at any point. Nothing here requires prior knowledge of the Bible.
What remains uncertain
Christian traditions differ substantially on the continuing role of the law; Jewish readings differ again. This app does not resolve that.
Why this matters
Torah means instruction rather than mere legislation; reading it as a rulebook distorts most of what it is doing.

Psalm 1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 119:9-16
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Romans 8:1-4
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Matthew 5:17-20
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:21-26
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Matthew 5:38-48
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

What human patterns appear
Instruction can be received as gift or as burden, often depending on how it was taught to us.
A description of patterns in the story and in ordinary life. Not a diagnosis of you.
These four layers are kept apart on purpose. The first describes what the text and its historical setting support. The symbolic and personal layers are reflective readings — ways of thinking with the material — and are not claims about what the original writer meant.
- Biblical meaning
What the text and its historical context support
The order matters: in Exodus the law comes after the deliverance. The New Testament then argues at length about how non-Jewish believers relate to it — an argument the letters never treat as trivial.
- Symbolic lensReflective
A reflective pattern — not necessarily the original authorial meaning
Reflectively, law can stand for the structures that make freedom liveable rather than restrict it. A reflective lens, offered as such.
- Personal reflectionReflective
An invitation to examine your own life — never a diagnosis or a verdict
You might ask where a lack of structure is quietly costing you freedom.
- Practice
Something small and realistic to actually do
Set one small boundary this week — a time, a limit, a stopping point — and keep it.
What Scripture calls toward
Scripture presents the law as the shape of a rescued life, not the price of rescue.
A general biblical direction — never a claim that God is commanding a particular decision of yours.
What does this represent to you right now?
This is a reflective question, not a test. There is no expected answer, and you can leave it blank. Anything you write stays on this device.
How this connects
Only connections seeded in this library are shown, and only where they are straightforwardly supportable.
Instruction, ark and temple
