Wisdom begins with reverence — an honest posture toward God — not with accumulating information.
Read the full study of Proverbs 1:7Verses 2–6 list what the book is for: wisdom, instruction, justice, discretion. Verse 7 then names the starting point for all of it, and verses 8 onward apply it to concrete choices about company, money, and speech.
Proverbs belongs to a wider ancient Near Eastern wisdom tradition (Egyptian and Mesopotamian instruction texts share the genre). Israel's version is distinctive in anchoring practical skill in covenant relationship with the LORD.
This verse functions as a thesis for the whole wisdom tradition. Scripture repeatedly ties knowing rightly to relating rightly: Job 28:28 and Psalm 111:10 make nearly the same claim. Knowledge is never treated as neutral information.
Most of us prefer being seen as competent over being corrected. Instruction threatens the picture we have of ourselves, so we quietly avoid the people and the feedback most likely to change us.
When correction arrives, attention tends to move toward defending the self-image rather than toward the content of what was said. Reverence reorders that: it puts truth above self-presentation, which frees attention to actually hear.
